Video Summary
This Ohio Notary Renewal Seminar reviews renewal requirements and key changes, including those enacted by House Bill 315 in April 2025. Only current, unexpired Ohio notaries should take the renewal course; expired commissions require the full new-notary process. Attorney notaries with qualifying lifetime commissions do not need renewal.

Renewal requires a one-hour course every five years and a BCI background check. The course may be completed within 12 months of expiration, the background check must be within six months of the application, and renewal materials may be submitted only during the final 90 days of the commission. Ohio has no grace period: once a commission expires, notarizing must stop, and the person must reapply as a new notary. Renewal materials—including background-check results, course certificate, and signature sample—are submitted through the Secretary of State’s website.

The seminar explains identification standards, jurats and acknowledgements, required notarial-certificate information, and rules for alternative signers and electronic notarizations. It distinguishes electronic notarization from online notarization, which requires separate authorization and technology. Notaries must follow strict limits: they cannot provide legal advice, notarize incomplete documents, or perform acts with conflicts of interest. They must report certain changes and disqualifying convictions, cooperate with state investigations, and report suspected elder abuse.

Violations can result in suspension or permanent commission revocation, and notaries may be personally liable for negligent acts. When uncertain, the seminar advises declining the notarization and consulting the Ohio Secretary of State.
